Christmas Break + Routine Change

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 10, 2015, 9:53 AM

Would really appreciate it if you have a look, it's a music video I helped create!

Hey all!

So, I'm finally on my Christmas break, well, have been for over a week now, but assignments and stuff are all sorted too, just one lil' exam on the 22nd and I'm good to go.
Then to enjoy a long-ass break that'll hopefully be productive!

So, as you've probably noticed, it's been, shit, like almost 8 weeks since I last did an MLP comic for you guys; between college and my own independent work, things got a little crazy.
Which has also lead me to want to change up how I do DeviantArt from now on.

Recently, myself and a few friends of mine, started up a creative group, Echo Tree, which we're using to develop and produce our own media productions, building up portfolios and making connections.
This is also something I plan on working with for as long as I can, meaning that it has priority over what I do here. Not trying to say that DeviantArt isn't important to me, but you get the idea.

So, instead of just making MLP comics and pretty much nothing else, I want to just use my DA account like you're supposed to; to just upload everything and anything that I doodle up and share with people; taking some of the pressure off of me, and allowing to just make whatever I feel like for this page.
This doesn't mean I'll stop making comics, it just means that I'll only be making them when they come to mind, instead of spending time trying to think of something before working on it.

So that'll probably mean I'll be posting some Undertale stuff for a lil' while, since I'm currently stuck in that phase :'D
Hopefully that's alright with you guys, I'll try make whatever I create somewhat interesting if possible!

Just Another Update

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 22, 2015, 2:32 PM

I'm not rip in pepperoni or anything like that.

Though you've probably noticed that I haven't posted a new comic, like, 5 weeks. :faint:
College is in full gear now, with a load of things due and just a massive workload in general.

I am, however, finished this semester in 3 weeks time, and should be able to start posting some stuff again around then.
I probably could've gotten maybe one or two things done during these past few weeks, but I spoilt myself and rewarded whatever free time I had with Fallout 4 or social nights out.

So yeah, it'll be another little while, but I'll do something around then, I'm sure of it :dummy:

Back in College

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 17, 2015, 10:06 AM

Should've made this journal several days ago, but, uh, kinda spent all my spare time playing MGS V ^^;

So, as the title suggests, I started up another year in college last Monday; my 3rd of a 4-year course.

While I should be able to still work on things fairly regularly throughout the semester, there may be times when I simply won't have much time left over to work on comics for you guys.
So, just in case things start to slow down a bit here, at least now you'll know why!

If I hadn't spent so much of my free time playing MGS V over the past week, I probably could've had something uploaded this week. :v

So yeah, just a heads up that things will most likely slow down a bit here over the coming months!
But I'll do my best not to let it slide too far.

But hey, you've got Season 5 on again now anyway. :dummy:

DeviantArtist Questionnaire

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 7, 2015, 2:20 PM
Everyone else is doing #DeviantArtistQuestionnaire, so why not?
PLUS ALL THE PAGES OF MENTIONS, GOD

1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?

5 years now, coming up on my 6th. Dayum. Feels like it was much less.

2. What does your username mean?

It's my nickname IRL, with a random number slapped on the end of it.

Everyone calls me Veggie offline, so I figured, why not have them do the same online?

Why 55?
Dunno really; sounded good to me.

3. Describe yourself in three words.

Cynical.
Sarcastic.
Open-minded.
Bad at following simple instructions.

4. Are you left or right handed?

Primarily right-handed, though in some cases I'm ambidextrous.

5. What was your first deviation?

It wasn't even originally drawn by me, but it was:
Spyro and the Light by Veggie55
Back when I used use GIMP and was just figuring out the absolute basics of digital art.
5 years down the line; I kinda know what I'm doing now.

6. What is your favourite type of art to create?

UH.
UHM...
Fuck, I dunno, something... good...ish?

7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

UH...
I suck at answering legit artist questions.
Uhhhhh.... I dunno, I guess, painting?

8. What was your first favourite?

It's in storage apparently!
Guess I'll never know...

9. What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

PONIES, I SUPPOSE.
And anything that makes me chuckle.

10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

ACH, if I have to choose...

The wonderful CSImadmax.

She's the reason I started making dumb comics in the first place.
Was about to shut down my account when I randomly came across her work.

11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

Well, thanks to Galacon last weekend, I'd a chance to meet some great people here already.

BUT I'M LOOKING AT YOU, Acesential, IT'S GONNA HAPPEN.
And a plethora of other wonderful people here.

PSST, GO TO BUCK AND GALACON 2016 KTNXBAI.

12. How was a fellow deviant impacted your life?

Well, I already mentioned CSImadmax earlier.

But, though not really a deviant, Calpain-EqD, helped convince me get back into comics.

And absolutely no regrets since; THANKS CAL!

13. What are your preferred tools to create art?

Tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS6.

14. What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

Bwaha... oh god, these aren't aimed at me at all.
All my stuff gets mad in the same spot; my arse on a chair in front of my PC.

But inspiration for ideas can come from literally anywhere; usually a frantic late-night struggle in bed to think of something...

..anything...

...fuck, please, think of something...

...NO, NOT ANOTHER TWILIGHT ONE...

...

..........fine.

15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

When a comic of mine was the most popular image on DeviantArt's front page:
 Number 1 Fan by Veggie55
I went from expecting, like, maybe 100-200 views on anything I made, then suddenly I logged on and this was on 20'000 views.
I was absolutely blown away; an incredible feeling.

Galacon Done and Dusted

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 2, 2015, 11:02 AM

Galacon was phenomenal.

It only ended 90 minutes ago, but feels like it was weeks ago already.
And I have to say, despite ALL the worries I had about it, it was an absolutely amazing experience.

My first ever convention, my first time ever doing a panel and hell, it was even my first time meeting other people who were interested in the fandom!
Despite a shaky start at the beginning of the first day, since I was pretty overwhelmed by everything that was going on, overall I think I didn't do too bad!

Met some awesome artists here on DA, such as FoxInShadow , Coltsteelstallion, EStories, drawponies and many more!

I finally got to meet the guys of EQD in person, in particular, calpain, who I first met on KnowYourMeme all the way back in 2012; that was pretty fucking cool!

And I met some wonderful people who were a fan of my comics here.
It's both incredible and awkward when someone, in person, tells you how much they appreciate what you make, and hell, some even said that I was an inspiration to their work that they create now, some even wanted autographs; I can't even begin to describe how meaningful and awesome that is in person. :')

Hell, everyone at the convention was just so down-to-earth and kind; HELL, WE RAISED, LIKE, €30'000 EURO IN THE CHARITY AUCTIONS THERE! :dummy:

And of course, my first time doing a panel.
Despite the inconsistencies in the brochure/website timetable, there was a much bigger turnout than I was expecting!
For a first timer, I think it didn't go too badly, but I've learned many ways to better manage my time and what to do during the panel.
(The panel of the wonderful Tabitha St. Germain and a stellar cast who did a lil' something special went on a little bit longer than originally anticipated, which bit into my own panel time, but man, was it worth it!)
It's a starting point, and hopefully if I do more panels in the future, I'll improve at doing them!

So now, as Acesential so eloquently put, I'm in the Post Con Depression state.
BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE
It makes me really, REALLY, wanna hit up BUCK 2016, as well as basically EVERY CONVENTION EVER.

Flying home tomorrow afternoon, and by Tuesday morning, things should slowly return to normal, making more comics and whatnot for you awesome people.

But man.

That was something special.

Time for Galacon!

It's almost time :dummy:

Made my way from Frankfurt to Stuttgart today, and now I'm painstakingly close to the Convention Centre.

BUT REAL TALK

I totally forgot to bring my laptop's mouse...and I've a panel on Sunday... GG WP

Anyone heading to Galacon wanna lend me a mouse for an hour? :'D
I kinda fucked up on that part.

BUT REGARDLESS, it oughta be interesting!
First time doing any type of con; let's see how horribly wrong things can go :la:

I'll see some of you around the place tomorrow!

Headed for Germany, WAT DO?

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 25, 2015, 3:10 PM
Left all of my planning until last minute :dummy:

Tomorrow I'm heading up to Dublin to get a flight out to Frankfurt, Germany, at 7am Monday morning.
Spending 5 days in Frankfurt before heading down through Darmstadt and on into Stuttgart; just in time for Galacon!

SO, WHO WANTS TO BE HELPFUL?

I've only done very  rudimentary tourist research on both Frankfurt and Stuttgart, but I'd love to hear from residents or past-visitors about what I should definitely see while I'm there!

ALL OF THE INFORMATION PLS <3

Oh, and see you all at Galacon, where hopefully my panel won't mess up too much! :la:

Galacon's Around the Corner

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 13, 2015, 12:35 PM

Prepping some final things before it starts, should be pretty easy to find me there now :la:

Legit ID by Veggie55

I should really spend time prepping the panel I'm doing more than anything...

OH, RIGHT, I SHOULD PROBABLY MENTION THAT.

I'll be doing a panel on the 2nd day (Sunday) at 12:30 in the Bürger-Saal!
[They called me Seán on the timetable, so just clearing that up.]

I'll basically be me showing people how I go from my initial rough sketches into a finished comic piece using Photoshop; might be useful to some people!
I've never done a physical panel before, let alone attend a convention, so expect absolutely everything that could go wrong to go wrong :dummy:

But hey, I'll be there for about an hour, most likely doing more talking than actual work; but should be fun!
If you're around, feel free to pop in!

Just wanted to let you know, and perhaps I'll see a few of you there!

On the 2nd day I'll be doing a panel for you folks.
Of course, I've never done one before, let alone attend a con, so expect absolutely everything to go wrong :dummy:

At it's core, it's a panel aimed at beginner digital artists, as well as traditional artists who maybe want a way to digitise their work.
But maybe it'll appeal to artists who already have their own methods and maybe just wish to see an alternative.

What I'll be doing is showing how I take my messy, unfinished sketches (Pretty sure it'll be the first time I've ever even shown my sketches) and fully flesh them out into a finished piece using software like Adobe Photoshop. (Lining, colouring, shading, etc...)
I'll also be doing a Q&A with anyone who wants to chat during the whole thing c:

Absolutely no idea how it's gonna play out, but hopefully I won't mess it up entirely!

So, this is something that has been bothering me for a while.
I often get messages saying things like "I wish I could draw like you!" or "I can't draw this well at all!

What if I told you that I used to be absolutely shite at digital art before?
Like, bloody atrocious. See for youself!

Back when I first started:

Oldest by Veggie55
Back when I was using GIMP, struggling to learn the basics of doing art on a computer, and using the mouse to do absolutely everything.
Shaky lines along with a plethora of other errors. But we all gotta start somewhere, right?

A few years later:

Older by Veggie55
A bit of an improvement over the years!
While the lines are still jittery and a few other questionable errors, I think you'll agree that it's leaps above what I was doing years before it.
Still stuck with beloved GIMP.

Recent work:

Now by Veggie55
After the almost 2-year hiatus I took, I moved on from GIMP and full-time into Photoshop.
SMOOTH LINES, would you believe it?!
As well as overall improvements to colouring and other areas.

So, what should you take from this?

Look, I don't even consider myself a proper artist; I don't strive to do it as a career, I just enjoy it as a hobby.
But even so, even I have improved after years of practice!

And hell, I know for a fact that I can do better than this, and only time/persistence will let that happen.

Basically what I'm saying is;

No matter how bad you think that you are right now, don't just give up. You're bound to improve.

Keep on doodling!

Okay, let's see how this goes.

If you're interested in getting a commission from me, send a note here on DeviantArt, something along the lines of "[COMMISSION]", so it'll be clear.

For now, I've no set pricing in mind, as I'm writing this as I head out the door. We'll discuss it in the notes; don't worry, I'm not too greedy. Though it's pretty much the same basic idea as anyone else's commissions (ie: Sketches would be cheaper than lineart, lineart is cheaper than flat colours, etc...)

Payment

As per usual, I keep it simple and just use Paypal.
I also prefer to wait until I've at least the sketch done before accepting payments; hate the feeling of owing things ^^;

Any payments will gladly aid in my way to possibly attending a few different cons this year :dummy:

What don't you do?

- I generally try to avoid comic-strip commissions. Unless they're absolutely brilliant or hilarious. (Not trying to sound too pretentious here.) But if you've an idea that you'd like someone to make, fire a note my way; I've had some great ones before.

- Humans. I dunno, I just don't enjoy drawing people, sorry. I:

- The... uh, different interests people have. *cough* Vore, and all that jazz. There are plenty of folks willing to do it out there, you'll find someone.

- OC characters. No, I do draw them, though I only tend to draw ones I actually like. (ie: No black/red alicorn bat OCs with some crazy-arse foot fetish or something kay?)

- I try to avoid anything that'll be insanely time-consuming too, unless of course, there's quite a decent little payment behind it c: #sellout

So yeah, if anyone's interested, note away!
I'll only take on a few at a time, so expect this journal to close and open repeatedly.

Oh, and if there's anything you're unsure of, leave a comment! I'll answer it.

LAST ASSIGNMENT HANDED UP, ALMOST HAVE MY SUMMER FREEDOM :dummy:

So, comics should return to normal soon!

But while I have you here, I wanted to ask something; do you or anyone you know need some additional voice-actors for anything in particular?
Last week I started recording things for people again, and just felt like offering to help anyone who could use it!

If you're interested, I've a few demos I can send your way to show what I generally do.
If you've never heard me before, basically people say I've a... how would you put it; deep, throaty voice, though many times I've been asked to do the likeness of Chris O'Neill (OneyNG).

While I certainly wouldn't call myself a professional, I have been paid on occasions to do lines for people; and I've a pretty decent mic-setup just for it.

Just wanted to put this out there, especially now that I'm almost on my summer holidays.
I never really bothered to try get into voice-work in the fandom for some reason, only stuff outside, so thought I'd see if anything's needed :la:

That is all!

Almost Finished

Sorry that I haven't had a comic for you guys in almost a fortnight now; things are still hectic at the moment with deadlines.
But this week is my final week of classes and all assignments will be submitted the following week :dummy:

So, hopefully I'll get something done up for you guys by then, and if not by then, at least I'll be at home with time to work on them for you.

Scrapped Comics

I actually managed to throw together two comics in the small smidgens of free time I had over the last week; but I'm not happy with them at all to be honest,
They just feel rushed and don't really go anywhere

If you still wanna check them out, here, I'll keep them in my stash:

Instead, I'd rather wait until I've something that I'm happy with to submit here.

Tiny F.A.Q.

People have been PMing me here, some with the same question repeated multiple times, so I figured that I'd take the most common ones asked and quickly answer here in the hopes that I won't be asked many times again :la:

Do you do requests/art-trades?

No, I generally don't.
I make exceptions for close friends or whatnot, but that's about it, sorry!

 Do you have a Patreon?

No, and I never will, don't worry.

I love/hate the idea of it; some people deserve to have one, as it really is the only way to help them with their talent.
Most people though, at least to me, don't deserve it, and simply use it as a means to make money for little to no effort.

While I'm flattered that you'd be willing to support me financially on a monthly basis, I'd be against the idea.
This is a hobby of mine, not a job, and there are many folks out there who deserve the generous donations that you're willing to give.

Plus, I mean, making money of a television IP is pretty fucking risky regardless :'D
*cough* Dodgy offerings of commissions *cough*

If you REALLY wanna donate to me in some way, I have a paypal account,  though steam games are always nice <3

Do you have any convention plans?

Well, as of now, nothing set in stone.

I've never physically attended one, though I was at Buck in the UK via Skype a few years back.
Let's just say, I've been asked by a few (Mainly around Europe) if I'd be willing to attend as a guest and I've yet to make a decision.

Though it does sound like it could be an awesome experience!

Oh, and another note type I've gotten a few of;
If you're organising a con, don't be afraid to ask me; I don't bite :'D

Some people have written to me, afraid that simply asking me about something was somehow offending me, huehue.
You can ask me whatever and anything; it's never a HASSLE to read text.
Unless it's a shite fanfic...

Will you ever update/make new tutorials?

Been meaning to for some time!
Possibly will over the summer; we'll see.

Do you have an OC?

Yus. The guy in my avatar.
This guy -->Veggie by Wicklesmack drawn by the wonderful Wicklesmack

Commissions m8?

Soon m8.

Can I add you on Skype/Steam ect.?

On skype, I pretty much accept anyone, so go nuts. Though granted, I often forget it's turned on and reply super late to folks.

As for steam? Well, it's my chill-out zone, I've had an issue years back where over 300 random bronies had added me and just blocked up my friends list.
So I'm kinda stricter about my Steam friends list nowadays.

Start on Skype or something, see where it goes! :dummy:

Uhm... did I miss anything... uh... feck, I don't really remember; those where the main ones.

If there's anything you wanna ask me that's not here, fire away; I don't bite.

Anyways, that's it for now folks!
One more week left, then a few more assignments to hand up and I should be able to chill for a while :la:

Final few weeks before the holidays.

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 19, 2015, 9:04 AM
Firstly, apologies for not having a comic uploaded this week.
I know that I don't normally aim to do stuff every week, but I do like when I get stuff done every 10-or-so days ^^;

I totally wasn't playing GTA V non-stop all week... no.... not...not at all :paranoid:

So yeah, as the title says, I'm in my last few weeks of college before we break off for the Summer holidays.

You: "Aww yeh, that's good, innit?"

Damn right it is!
But it does mean that my assignment deadlines are fast approaching... and there's still quite a lot of work left to do.

You: "So, uh, wut does this mean?"

Well, it means that buying GTA V right before the the holidays was a stupid fucking idea  It means that Why, why did I do this to myself?!   IT MEANS THAT I'll be pretty slow to work on comics and whatnot for a few weeks; just while I'll balance it out with assignments and other things.

But I will hopefully get one uploaded some time during this coming week!

You: "Ah, so a lot of exams and stuff?"

Lel, no. I do multimedia, I've only 1, 30-minute exam. Instead of studying, I've constant assignment work to do!

BUT HEY!

When I'm on my holidays, commissions will be open again; this time without the pressures of trying to balance them with college work :dummy:

You: "And how are you in general?"
N'aww, you care? xox

Not too bad, to be honest!
Just so long as I get all this stuff done on time, I should stay that way.

Though I wish I had the Witcher 3 right now... blarg
