This journal is for anyone who's commissioned me lately but hasn't received theirs yet.

Just now, I've finally managed to reboot my computer after it froze up suddenly, but I'm afraid I've some bad news.

I'd finished 4 and was halfway though my 5th commission on the list and was set to upload them on Wednesday in a bunch.

But whilst the repair tool was running on windows it wiped certain files at random, a lot of my digital images included, and all of my commissions, both paid and unpaid.

I'm sorry guys, but after spending hours on all of them only to have them wiped, I've no motivation whatsoever to do them again.
I know this'll piss a lot of people off, but it's also pissing me off.

I'm sorry.

- Veggie

What can ya do? We all move on, and quite frankly, I know the pain in the @$$ it is to lose important files on your computer and need them for some reason later.

Ugh, I haaaate it when this stuff happens to me... one of my worst traits is that if I've done something and it gets undone or unwritten beyond my power, I feel no desire to ever redo it. The motivation is so far gone that I will spend anywhere from a few months to never, before it ever gets redone again. This can go from video games to art or anything else ever. It sucks and it's one of the most frustrating feelings in the world >_>

I'd seriously be ripping my hair out if it happened over commissions. I feel really bad for you :<

As people told before:

1) Cheer up, it happens.

2) Now you know to backup your stuff!

3) PC froze up and repair tool wiped files?! Impossibru! Even Windows isn't that bad. You hard drive might be corrupted or you might have a virus.

4) You can try to recover these files, but don't save anything on that disk, because it might overwrite them. (These files should still be there, just place where they are is marked as empty - that's how deleting works. If this is marked as empty place, Windows can write data there, so be careful.) Google some programs for undeleting (but look on the licenses, some demos only allow you to undelete few files, some only allow you to see files that can be undeleted).

5) BACKUP YOUR STUFF!

And if you are using GIMP, not PS, you can try Ubuntu or something similar. It is better than Windows (faster, especially on old PCs, stable, more secure). Only possible issues you can encounter are:
- No Linux drivers available for your hardware (or half-assed drivers some hardware manufacturers like to make).
- Apps you use have no Linux versions and no equivalents.
- You just like Windows better.

What sort of "repair tool" would wipe out random files like that?

As a computer and Windows expert, there are only two things I can think of that would cause this: Either you've got a virus (some of them will hide your documents and then ask for money to bring them back), or you've got a hard drive that's on the way out.

This leads me to wonder what exactly happened when your computer "froze up" like that. If you've got failing hardware, it's time to backup stuff and then go shopping!

Ya know, if you were more fair, you would give those who hadn't received their commission their :points: back.
(Not saying you're NOT fair, and this is NOT to my own good, since I didn't buy anything at all!)

At least there weren't any monetary transactions. If they would've paid beforehand, refunding the money with an apology would've been sufficient too.

it is understandable, not that I had a commission from you, but I have done that with games and art. You spend hours on it without saving (or getting it deleted) then you look at it and are just so frustrated it makes you sick. You were there, and now have to start over? I know how you feel. Some pictures I would love to do again, but it still is so frustrating.

I do things all with traditional mediums, and I have coloured whole pictures and they get ruined and I just never start them over.

That sucks. Goes to show ya need to upload them asap just in case #(%* like this happens again. It happened to me before where the file got corrupted and I had to do it all over again. So now when I finish a Piece its up on DA within minutes. I also take a Screen Capture just before saving it or closing the program. Ya im not taking chances with dumb glitchy laptop...

I've had that happen before. Twice. On two large files. ._. What I will say though is that when I did (begrudgingly) go back to finish them out, I found myself doing much better at them than I had before. I've considered those occasions intensive - yet grueling - training.

Man, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear what happened. At least you were honest and kept your clients up to date. During the many years I commissioned artists, the best way to keep the relationship between artist and client is for the artist to be true to his client and inform him/her on any update whatsoever. And you, my friend, have the knack of having that quality. But again things happen in a way you do not expect so I hope you recover from this. I do look forward in working with you in the near future. Keep up the great work.

I totally understand the want to not redo everything. As long as you refund the paid ones it's all cool right? Though, have you tried windows system restore and back the pc up a few days? Sometimes that can recover lost files. Sorry to hear it man, hope you get your computer sorted out!

I'm really sorry to hear that. I haven't had something of that scale happen to me before, but I have made an edit that I meant to undo on one picture (I had merged a bunch of layers, and I meant to seperate them before I saved) and then I accidentally saved it without undoing it. And there was no way to undo the save. System Restore wasn't much help, either, because for some reason you had to MANUALLY set up a backup for a file.
That caused me to blow a fuse, so I can only imagine what it would be like to lose days' worth of work because of something so trivial as a tool running. I wouldn't be surprised if you were thinking about throwing the thing out of a balcony- without your hard drive, hopefully.
What I recommend for the future, Veggie, is to start a full system backup while you sketch your latest creation out on paper. That way, if the files get wiped again, then you can just move back to before the crash, and now you have your files back!
Or you could use that program that others have been mentioning, winundelete, to save these files. I know how important those .xcf files are. Irreplaceable. So are .sai files, and .psd, .ai, .svg, any proprietary file type for a drawing program.

I hope this all helps, but honestly I'm not a member of the Geek Squad. I wish I was, so I could help you out of your problem in a technical way. This is really all I can give you.

(By the way, do you guys have Best Buy over in Ireland?)

There is a program called Dropbox that allows you to upload files there (google and microsoft also have such services) for free. You can use it to backup your files by saving them in the folder that is set to be backed up and this will mean that if something happens to your computer, you will have a backup online. Furthermore, it will update the files so if you change them on your computer, it will also be changed on the online version. Finally it is secure so you don't have to worry about someone stealing them. Also, I'm sorry about the loss, it is frustrating when stuff like that happens. I used to go to an online high school and several times I had school projects that I spent hours on only to have a computer crash wipe out everything

I know what it is.
Nothing is more frustrating and motivation-kill than doing AGAIN something that was already DONE. Or even just begin.

My tip is to get away from all of this for one or two days. After forgetting the whole thing about doing again something that used to be finished, when you'll go back to it it'll still be a no motivation and no will to do it. But you'll be less on your nerves. It's just that, this is it. Bt it's better than nothing, it's the little thing that makes the whole [insert censored stuff here] a little less aberrant.

Good luck with this.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, man. Trust me, it really hurts when you lose data like that. This is why I don't trust Windows' recovery and repair options at all with all the projects I have, finished or unfinished. Something's bound to be lost.

If I could make a suggestion, it'd be wise to invest in an external hard drive to keep a backup of your files in the event of a failure. A lot of high-capacity drives (1TB and above) are worth around $100-$150 (I'm going off Canadian prices, mind you. I'm sure they're a bit cheaper in the States). That's quite good, IMO, seeing as more reliable Solid State Drives are still overly expensive and low in capacity.

It's quite sad to see you've lost motivation here, but I can't blame you for it. Sometimes technology can fail on us screw us over, and there's nothing you can do about it. You just have to move on and learn from the disaster. Hopefully the damage won't be as severe next time it happens. ;)

External HDDs are nice, but only as good as your backup software. I have one that auto-runs daily, and I've still lost stuff that happened between the last evening's backup and an afternoon crash. Very little was lost, but still enough to be annoyed.
